THE DISPATCH

Gerry Duggan’s West Coast Avengers #3 throws the team headfirst into a double dose of Ultron-related trouble. This issue balances the immediate threat of a second Ultron with a fascinating flashback revealing the surprising origin of the first Ultron – the heroic one residing in Iron Man’s armor. It’s a clever narrative structure that keeps the reader engaged on multiple levels.

Duggan’s strength lies in his character work, and this issue is no exception. The West Coast Avengers continue to gel as a team, their individual personalities and quirks shining through even amidst the chaos. The banter is sharp, and the moments of vulnerability add depth to these sometimes-overlooked heroes. The tension between the team members, particularly given the re-emergence of Ultron, is palpable.

The flashback sequences detailing the “hero” Ultron’s creation and integration are genuinely compelling. It provides much-needed context for the character’s presence within Iron Man’s armor and adds a layer of complexity to his motivations. Duggan cleverly uses this backstory to raise questions about free will, programming, and the potential for redemption, even for a being as inherently destructive as Ultron.

The appearance of a second, more traditionally villainous Ultron is a classic comic book trope, but Duggan handles it well. This new Ultron, establishing himself as the leader of a bizarre new religion, promises to be a significant threat. The contrast between the two Ultrons – one striving for heroism, the other embracing villainy – creates a compelling dynamic.

The art is solid and effectively conveys the action and emotion of the story. The designs for both Ultrons are distinct and memorable.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, West Coast Avengers #3 is a strong entry in the series. It’s a fun and engaging read that offers a fresh perspective on Ultron while continuing to develop the West Coast Avengers as a team. The cliffhanger ending leaves readers eager for more.
