The Dispatch:
Kieron Gillen is a writer whose work has always strayed from the norm and brought unique and interesting ways to look at the world around us. In this book, Gillen sets up a unique plot by showing us a story where six extremely powerful people coexist in a world that would fear them. That may sound like the setup for X-Men (there is probably some inspiration from his previous work on the X-Men books here) but Gillen differentiates it entirely. This book is in no way comparable to Gillen’s previous work and is unique even for him. Even though the writer has developed a unique premise for the readers, it is quite complex. The storytelling in The Power Fantasy #1 mostly comprises of expositional dumps that get extremely tedious and that further affect the reading experience extremely negatively.

The characters of The Power Fantasy # 1 seem to be interesting and complex individuals that each have their own plotlines that can be explored in future issues of the book. It is better to let the next few issues come out before analyzing any of the characters.

The Art:
The Art Style of The Power Fantasy #1 is a lot like the plot, unique. A unique style helps complement a unique story effectively. The small amount of action in the issue is well-crafted and very impactful. Caper Wijngaard creates an impactful and unique reading experience through his art.

Final Thoughts:
The Power Fantasy #1 offers a fresh take on superhero stories with only six people having superpowers. Kieron Gillen’s writing explores the political and social implications of such a world, even if it sometimes feels bogged down by heavy exposition. The characters show promise for interesting future storylines, though they aren’t fully developed yet. Caper Wijngaard’s unique art style adds a lot to the story, making this first issue an intriguing start to the series.
