The Story

Kaplan shows us some of the stakes of the fight on the first page before picking up the story of Metal Society directly following the challenge issued to Rosa Genthree by Wal-421313 at the end of the last issue.

This issue is a great midway point for the series in that it does a good job of setting the stakes and upping the tension between the fighters but readers may feel that it’s dragging at times as they are continuously teased with the prospect of the match.  On one hand, this shows how well Kaplan has done at inspiring excitement in readers, but on the other, there isn’t a ton of fighting for a series that is all about fighting.

The Art

The art of Metal Society #3 continues to be strong due to the creative team of Guilherme Balbi and Marco Lesko.  Balbi has built an intricate world over the last three issues, building a post-human world that is centered around robots while also showing the needs of humanity creeping back into the culture.

The characters and settings are distinct and recognizable which helps the readers with continuity between issues.  Paired with this, Lesko’s colors are unbelievable, communicating the tone and emotion that is evident in Kaplan’s writing and taking it to new heights.

Final Thoughts

Metal Society #3 is a solid issue that marks the midway point for the series.  Zack Kaplan uses the issue to build tension and excitement as the series heads into the long-teased Human vs Robot fight.  Guilherme Balbi and Marco Lesko continue as a great team to make the art of Metal Society absolutely beautiful.
