THE DISPATCH

This is fast right out of the gate. It’s Easy reading from this Easy Company as readers quickly come down to what appears to be the final free-for-all with Hitler and his drugged-up zombie army. As DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #5 begins, the narration unveils some nice perspectives about war, all the moving parts behind war, and what it takes to succeed. It was interesting to hear that everything can go right but merely the speed and timing of events could be a bit off and mess up the entire thing. It was actually quite a humbling look at war from that perspective.

Ultimately, readers get a viciously graphic melee cluttered with blood and zombie guts. Easy Company does its best to survive Hitler’s last stand. And this isn’t the regular old Hitler either. This was a half-zombie, juiced-up Hitler that may be worth the price of admission alone. But readers should be prepared to see heads explode, knives through faces, guts shot through, and so much more. Additionally, the dark, dull, almost flat coloring worked well with the tone and atmosphere of DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #5. Nevertheless, if I was simply to knock one item, it’s that the comic is very predictable and a bit too quick of a read at times.

FINAL THOUGHTS

DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead #5, like the entire series to date, is just a straightforward, quick, easy read that’s loads of fun. There’s nothing too deep and there’s nothing difficult to understand. It’s actually so easy to follow anyone could hop right in and not skip a beat even in the penultimate issue. You’ll need little thought and will find DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock vs. The Army of the Dead is a leisurely getaway like a good 80s action flick. However, its comfortable, almost cavalier design does make for a rather predictable comic. That said, this art team builds this story up well with some intense graphics and the perfect wartime atmosphere to boot. It may be too late to hop on board now, however, this would definitely be the perfect trade to balance out this fast-paced design.
