THE DISPATCH
Batman #144 takes readers on a thrilling ride through the shadows of Gotham City in the early years after the Joker first “became” the Joker. However, it’s the future storyline that showcased the Dark Knight’s resilience and determination in the face of insurmountable odds as the city (and possibly the world) was overrun by Jokerized people. That said, it’s Zdarsky’s narrative prowess that shines brightly in this issue as he delves deep into Joker’s psyche, exploring themes of insanity, pain, redemption, and sacrifice promoting Jim Gordon’s character in the process. As this mystery unfolds, Zdarsky knits a complex web of intrigue, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page. However, I found myself leaving the Batman #144 with very few answers and honestly a bit more confused.

Nevertheless, the dialogue flamed with intensity, capturing the essence of the Joker with precision and depth. His internal struggle is palpable, adding layers of complexity to his already multifaceted persona. Moreover, it’s Jim Gordon who shines the brightest as he perseveres through it at and out the other side. And this leads to the main point. Zdarsky’s understanding of the characters is evident, as he effortlessly navigates between Joker’s forbearing exterior, his inner turmoil, and Batman’s confusion even after 30 years.

The artwork in Batman #144 is truly spectacular. Each panel is meticulously crafted, with dynamic action sequences and atmospheric backgrounds that bring Gotham City to life as well as the mind of the Joker. Yet again I can’t help but wish the entire comic was drawn within the context of the future artwork. It’s the use of shadows and light that were particularly striking, enhancing the noir aesthetic that has become synonymous with the Batman franchise.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, Batman #144 is well crafted and mesmerizing for fans of the Joker as well as the Dark Knight. With its clever storyline, masterful writing, and stunning artwork, Zdarsky has delivered a Batman tale that is as dark and brooding as it is exhilarating forming the foundation for one of his most iconic villains. However, I still felt like the story went nowhere and gave us little direction and answers. Whether you’re a seasoned Batman aficionado or a newcomer to the world of Gotham City, this issue is sure to leave you eagerly anticipating what comes next. Nevertheless, prepare to leave with mild confusion as to where this series is going and what’s on the horizon. Let me know what you think, have a great week, and God Bless!
