Recent changes have happened for Task Force X. As Peacemaker takes the reins as team leader, there will be no more retribution or protection for the government’s covert task force of murderers, criminals, and fugitives. Now, Amanda Waller, who’s regained her authority over the SUICIDE SQUAD, has sent her new team into Arkham Asylum to enlist the lethal COURT OF OWLS assassin Talon. Let’s dive into SUICIDE SQUAD #1 by Robbie Thompson and see if their first mission is a success. Or, will Waller have to enlist some help from outside her normal realm of jurisdiction in order to succeed?

STORY

Call it a soft reboot. Heck, call it whatever you want. Either way, FUTURE STATE, and the INFINITE FRONTIER have kickstarted DC COMICS and set the stage for its future. Now, before you dive into SUICIDE SQUAD, I would highly recommend grabbing INFINITE FRONTIER first and checking it out. What you’ll discover is that this issue of SUICIDE SQUAD weaves right into many aspects of the INFINITE FRONTIER. And to this reviewer, that’s a step in the right direction. Continuity is key and Robbie Thompson just showed fans that he plays well with others, which is huge!

As for the story and the characters, some throwaway SUICIDE SQUAD members meet their untimely death like most do, however, the foundational players will remain. And if I may be so bold, I love the core group members to this point. It’s a unique blend of talented characters that have recently been put in time out at DC COMICS. Now, Thompson has allowed them to shine and I, for one, am excited to see where this goes.

Now, readers know that Amanda Waller is always up to something. However, Flagg seems to be drastically appalled by what she’s up to. Furthermore, the two big reveals during this issue elevated my interest exponentially causing this comic fan to be wildly intrigued by a SUICIDE SQUAD book for the first time in a long time. Moreover, Thompson raises the level of continual action from beginning to end… so much so that it’s practically relentless. Likewise, the issue ends at the prime moment for an epic onslaught to happen as issue two takes off. I hope that Thompson prolongs this rally and doesn’t instantly end the Arkham Assault.

ART

Eduardo Pansica and Julio Ferreira do a stellar job throughout this entire comic. The colors are bright and vibrant and the linework is precise, clean, and crisp. The panels are strategically placed to bring each character into the spotlight at just the right time while producing a natural movement that ushers the reader throughout the issue. Pansica’s illustrations are incredibly detailed, violently aggressive, and fit the tone of a SUICIDE SQUAD series beautifully. Plus, if you’re interested in a graphic comic, this series may be right up your alley. From the texture and intricate illustrations to the powerful color choices, Pansica and Ferreira make this the perfect superhero comic for any level of fan.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This issue has excitement, adventure, conspiracy, current continuity within the INFINITE FRONTIER, and intriguing new SUICIDE SQUAD members. From start to finish, Thompson bombards readers with action while Pansica and Ferreira light up each page with insane illustrations that make this issue come to life. Together, this creative team has done a fantastic job igniting an allure in this new frontier that’s stimulating and energizing. As of right now, I’m all in on SUICIDE SQUAD and I can’t wait to see how Thompson weaves Conner Kent SUPERBOY into this series. Give this issue a look, consider adding this series to your pull list, and let me know what you think. Have a great week and God bless!
