THE DISPATCH

In The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #7, Daphne wins her town’s local talent competition, and advances to national division, based in Gotham City. There’s no real reason for the competition to be set in Gotham, other than the fact that we know it’s supposed to be a Batman crossover story. That said, this story didn’t feel too Batman-oriented. Besides Batman himself, none of Batman’s usual enemies or allies are seen except for one at the very end of the story. The villain reveal was also somewhat predictable. Besides the actual villain, it’s also predictable as to which character ends up being the villain.

The only thing they did that was a bit of plot twist was combining characters that appear to be two separate characters, into one character. Unfortunately, there is even an error, as the character of “Simon Black” is referred to as “Jackson Black” by Batman after he had previously been referred to as Simon all throughout the comic. Obviously the character is supposed to be a spoof of Simon Cowell from American Idol and America’s Got Talent, but that’s pretty unprofessional coming from mainstream publisher like DC, not to mention confusing. This story was rather weak and felt forced.

ART

The art in The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #7 is fairly standard for this series, done in a cartoony style that reflects the traditional animation styles of Scooby-Doo. One thing worth noting is that aside from one page in her normal outfit, Daphne Blake is in her karate uniform for the entire issue. There are also a lot of characters in goofy costumes, adding to the absurdity of the competition. You can still tell what’s going on in the story if you ignore the text, and while the art isn’t terrible, there aren’t really any moments that stand out either.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #7 is kind of lackluster compared to previous stories from this series. The villain isn’t revealed until the last page, and Batman doesn’t really do too much in this issue. If you’re a Scooby fan, or fan of reality shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent, you might enjoy this, but otherwise you might want to pass on this particular issue.
