THE DISPATCH

Shazam! #11 takes a humorous detour from the superheroics, focusing on Billy Batson’s foster family, the Vasquezes. Having decided to adopt Billy and his siblings, the Vasquezes must now pass a home inspection. However, their good intentions are challenged by the magical renovations their superpowered housemate has made.

Writer Josie Campbell excels at portraying the warmth and humor of the Shazam! family dynamic. Shazam! #11 cleverly explores the challenges of navigating adoption while living in a superhero-shaped home. Billy’s attempts to hide the magical oddities create laugh-out-loud moments, while the genuine affection between the Vasquezes and their foster children tugs at the heartstrings.

However, while the focus is on family humor, the issue doesn’t shy away from Billy’s emotional vulnerability. A touching scene between Billy and his foster father reminds readers of the weight Billy carries despite his superhero facade.

ART

Emanuela Lupacchino’s artwork brings the humor to life. Her expressive characters and cartoony exaggerations perfectly capture the chaos of a magically messy house. The visual gags are well-placed, adding to the lighthearted tone of the story.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Shazam! #11 is a delightful departure from the usual superhero fare. Campbell’s witty script and Lupacchino’s charming artwork create a heartwarming and humorous story. While the issue lacks superhero action, it delivers a satisfying exploration of family dynamics and the challenges of fitting in, even with superpowers. This is a perfect pick-me-up for fans of the Shazam! family and anyone who enjoys a good dose of comic book family fun.
