THE DISPATCH

Another adventure with the Justice Ducks! Justice Ducks #2 presents an obvious parody of the popular British science fiction series, Doctor Who, as they introduce the character of “The Maven”. Fans of Doctor Who will certainly appreciate this reference. The Darkwing characters are written in character and there is good mixture of action and comedy, in keeping with the tone of the Darkwing Duck show. The dialogue is mostly fitting for the characters, though Darkwing doesn’t usually call Morgana “doll”, but that’s not something too out of character for him either.

The Justice Ducks work well together, but this issue really allows Gizmoduck the opportunity to shine. It plays to his area of expertise, technology, and shows that even when dealing with advanced, alien technology, it’s often the simplest technology that works. There is only a brief appearance from Launchpad and none from Gosalyn, though they aren’t official Justice Ducks members anyway. Darkwing is underemphasized throughout most of the action in the issue, though his ego remains as big as ever, as he doesn’t want the Justice Ducks “slowing him down”.

ART

The art in Justice Ducks #2 is reflective of the Darkwing Duck animation style. There is a lot of action as well as bright colors. This is especially apparent in panels where we see ray guns zapping characters, as well the glow around the time machine pod when it first appears and right before it disappears. This issue also shows us Gizmoduck’s alter-ego, Fenton Crackshell again, along with his tech lab he uses to refine his suit. The holograms the villain uses are depicted well, and it is an interested artistic choice in one panel to make the buildings somewhat warped looking at an odd angle.

FINAL THOUGHTS

You don’t have to be a “Whovian” to enjoy this comic. Justice Ducks #2 is fun for the whole family. You will especially enjoy this issue if you are a fan of both Darkwing Duck and Doctor Who. If you aren’t interested in Doctor Who, you may not appreciate this comic as much, but it’s still an enjoyable story.  Overall though, it wraps up nicely in this fun adventure.
