THE DISPATCH

Gargoyles Quest #1 is set immediately following the events of the Gargoyles comic. While it’s not entirely necessary for readers to have read that series first, those who have will appreciate this series more, as it draws on a lot of plot elements covered in that series and expands upon those stories. Weisman definitely knows how to craft a story in order to make it compelling for readers and he draws upon previous plot points from the show and the preceding comic, such as Broadway and Angela’s upcoming commitment ceremony and even the return of Vinnie Grigori, the comedic character from the show who splatted a pie in Goliath’s face.

Demona returns in rare form after she was previously seen at the end of the final Gargoyles issue, revealed to be working with Coldstone. This issue shows us just how cunning she can be, even at odds with other villains, to achieve her power-hungry goals. We also see the return of Thailog, and his rivalry with Demona continues. The dialogue is fitting for the characters and readers can easily imagine the voices of Keith David, Marina Sirtis, Ed Asner and others reading the lines.

ART

The art in Gargoyles Quest #1 is significantly better than the art in the previous Gargoyles comics from Dynamite, for the most part anyway. There is a lot of good use of shadows and the art matches the animation style of the show in a lot of ways. The main character it falls short with is Goliath, as there are a few instances in this issue where he seems to be depicted a little “off” from how he looked in the show, mainly his nose looks a bit too inverted and his forehead is protruding out with the small horns on his head almost nonexistent.  That being said, Goliath isn’t as prominent in this issue, so it may improve as the series goes on. The part where Demona transforms from human to gargoyle was particularly well done. The colors create an eerie tone which is fitting for this comic.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Gargoyles Quest #1 is shaping up to be a very compelling story so far. If you’re a fan of the show and like to see the sinister schemes of characters like Demona and Thailog, this comic is for you. Weisman knows how to leave his audience on the edge of their seats craving more, and this comic is no exception. It is exciting, full of mystery and intrigue and really captures the spirit of the show.
