THE DISPATCH

Batman: One Bad Day— Bane #1 is less about Bane’s origins, and more about his character development. His origins are alluded to, but this comic focuses more on Bane as an ally of Batman than as an enemy. They aren’t necessarily portrayed as friends, but form an uneasy alliance for a common goal. We do see Bane portrayed in a more sympathetic light. Readers who have overcome drug addiction will really empathize with how Bane is depicted in this issue.

ART

Howard Porter’s art in Batman: One Bad Day- Bane #1 is very detailed. The panel when Batman is first introduced in the story stands out, as he stands atop a gargoyle surrounded by flying bats. Even though this book is more about Bane than it is Batman, the artist made sure to make Batman’s presence felt in the story through outstanding panels such as that. The scene with explosions are also done really well, with both the bright colors and the bold onomatopoeias.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Batman: One Bad Day— Bane #1 really shows good character growth for the titular character. If you’re not a fan of villains having redemption stories, this isn’t the comic for you. If you like inspirational stories of character growth, then you will certainly appreciate this. This issue certainly shows many different sides to the character of Bane.
