There is a lot of exposition and I mean A LOT is covered in only the second issue of We Have Demons. While it’s nice to not have the information dragged out, it also felt like we are given almost too much for one issue. We learn more about Lam’s father, the Angels he worked with, Gus’s backstory, and even the origin of those skin-tight Moon Knight-looking white uniforms the Angels wear. Fans of Snyder’s work are likely used to this type of storytelling. At least this issue of We Have Demons is longer than your standard single issue to cover all this.
Gus’s backstory as a Demon fighting his own kind is heartbreaking. Learning what keeps him from going back to evil is an interesting concept, especially when this issue temporarily fails to work. That’s not to say this issue doesn’t have action, mostly thanks to Capullo’s energetic art. Moreover, Capullo can bring horror and action together very well. Capullo and Snyder’s revered Batman run showed how well he can bring the two together. He likely developed these skills early in his career when he was drawing Spawn.
Hopefully, this heavy dose of information is all to clear the field and the series can move on to whatever direction this it wants to take. So far to summarize, there’s basically a young woman who‘s introduced to the existence of Demons and a team her father helped create to fight them. That might sound like a setup to a Buffy or CW-like show, but We Have Demons looks like it will be darker and way more violent than that.
Snyder’s new publishing company has an interesting business model. All of the books release digital-first and at some point will be collected in print by Dark Horse Comics. But if you have Comixology or Kindle unlimited, or even Amazon Prime Reading, you can read each issue for free. That alone makes it worth checking out. The art is crisp and exciting, but it does feel like there is an info dump covering a lot of material for one issue. If you like a good Demon hunting team story, We Have Demons #2 might be up your alley, especially if you can try it out for free.
