THE DISPATCH
In Gargoyles #10, we come to the conclusion of Goliath’s hearing. This issue is narrated by Katana. As readers, we get to learn more about this new character, as we read her inner thoughts. Through her narration, we understand a little bit more about her history and how she came to meet Brooklyn and the rest of the Manhattan Clan. We also see Elisa Maza, who took the stand at the end of last issue, come clean about her relationship with Goliath. This issue does an excellent job of summarizing themes and plot points from the series, such as the moral question of whether gargoyles have sentience and qualify for human rights, as well as Elisa’s love affair with Goliath and the ethics of whether she was right to keep secrets from her superiors. It also shows us that despite seemingly upholding morals and ethics, some characters are still very prone to corruption.
ART
The art in Gargoyles #10 reflects the series well, and although Katana did not appear in the show, it is easy to imagine this as an actual episode and how Katana could’ve easily fit into the show. The background of on the first page shows the culture of where Katana is coming from, depicting a monastery and Japanese cherry blossoms. There’s a great two-page spread, showing various characters, both friends and foes, which have been staple characters in both the show and this comic series. While not explicitly stated, it is very likely that these various characters have been watching the hearing unfold and are awaiting the judge’s verdict. There’s also a great panel showing Goliath flying off into the distance.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Gargoyles #10 presented a solid conclusion to this story arc, but also leaves readers with an anticipation of what’s to come by showing something significant happening in the life of a minor character from the show. This issue uncovered secrets before the characters and also showed that some secrets are being kept hidden from other characters. Will these secrets being exposed by the final issue, and what might be the repercussions of revealing such secrets?
