THE DISPATCH

Even if you’ve never seen Space Ghost, if you like movies like Sharknado or cartoons like Street Sharks, you will probably enjoy Space Ghost #4. This issue sees Space Ghost battle humanoid alien sharks. The space sharks first appeared in the 1981 Space Ghost cartoon, “Attack of the Space Sharks”. In addition, this issue also pays tribute to the classic 1966 cartoon episode, “Glasstor” by having the space sharks at war with the beings from the crystalline empire of Glasstor. The two worlds are in the middle of an attempted peace that goes south and soon sparks an intergalactic war. Space Ghost attempts at diplomacy will not stop these empires from feuding. Space Ghost #4 also includes the character of Pirahnor, who first appear in the 1966 episode of the cartoon, “The Space Piranhas”. Here, he an underling of King Remora, leader of the space sharks. It is very fitting that these characters are lumped together since they both intergalactic fish people. This issue does a good job of reimaging these classic Space Ghost characters by making them rivals, and putting Space Ghost and his sidekicks in more significant danger than usual.

ART

The art in Space Ghost #4 is consistent with the art from previous issues. King Remora is depicted with a realistic looking shark head making him all the more threatening and intimidating than he ever was in the cartoon. There are also many intense battle scenes between the space sharks and the Glasstorians. The panel when Space Ghost shields both Glasstor and King Remora from outstanding attack is a standout. There are many explosions and a lot of bright colors as Space Ghost exudes much energy as he tries to prevent the war. In particular, the panel showing the explosion of energy as Space Ghost slingshots himself across the gravity field of Planet Liquo (home of the space sharks) is quite astounding. The exterior of Planet Liquo is very detailed and realistic looking too.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Space Ghost #4 is an exciting issue that continues to present classic characters in new ways and ends with a thrilling cliffhanger. It reimagines classic characters in new ways and puts characters together that never interacted with each other in the original cartoons. Space Ghost has survived worse scrapes than this, but will he be powerful enough to end this battle? Will the space sharks and the Glasstorians destroy the galaxy? Who will triumph? And what will happen to Jace? Find out next issue!
