THE DISPATCH

Last time, we saw Negaduck captured by a sea monster as he attempted to venture to Agony Island to uncover the gauntlet of King Midas. In Negaduck #3, the story continues. The story does a great job of pitting the villains against each other. There’s also a funny reference to The Little Mermaid movie too. The characters are definitely written well and the dialogue is fitting for each of them. The readers can very well imagine the voices of Jim Cummings, Michael Bell, Jack Angel, Tino Insana, and Dan Castellaneta as saying the lines for each member of the Fearsome Five. Although they don’t necessarily get along, the issue shows them tolerating each other, at least for the moment. The “incantation” that Negaduck reads is definitely in keeping with the humor of the show.

ART

The artwork in Negaduck #3 continues to be good and pretty faithful to the animation style of the show. There are a lot of bright colors befitting the world of Darkwing Duck and company. The plant and sea creatures are drawn well. They are depicted as somewhat fearsome, but still in a Disney cartoonish way. The vulture or buzzard character may be an agent of FOWL, although it is not confirmed. There are lots of details in the palace of King Midas and 3 members of the Fearsome Five try out different gauntlets, leading to different results than they were anticipating. As always, Negaduck’s megalomania is depicted the best through his eyes changing colors, as he gets closer to his prize. His lust for power is contrasted with the fearful expressions of the rest of the Fearsome Five, as they are about to face an unknown threat that will be revealed next issue.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Negaduck #3 is a good continuation of this storyline. It shows the Fearsome Five working together, albeit begrudgingly, for a common goal. This issue shows that they are able to hold their own in a story without Darkwing Duck, and it still provides much entertainment for readers. One can only wonder what mischief they’ll get themselves into next. What challenges might they face next issue?
