THE DISPATCH

A brand-new comic set in the world of Disney’s Lilo and Stitch! Lilo & Stitch #1 showcases excellent characterization of the characters. It is difficult to determine where this fits on the timeline as of yet, as there have been 3 movies and animated television series after the first movie. The humor of the movie is present and the family dynamic, as it reinforces to us the Hawaiian concept of “ohana”. One part that might be mildly irritating for ardent fans is that the other characters kept referring to Jumba as “Dr. Jumba” and even though he was technically a doctor, they mainly referred to him just as “Jumba” on the show. Aside from that though, they really captured the spirit of the films and the animated series in this comic. The new characters are flawlessly inserted into this fictional universe and embody the tone set by the first film very well.

ART

The art in Lilo & Stitch #1 is fantastic. It is practically identical to the animation style of the film. This includes not only the drawings of the characters, but the childlike drawings of Lilo and Stich too. In this issue, Lilo teaches Stitch how to draw, and there is a section featuring these childlike drawings while Lilo narrates as she speaks from Stitch’s perspective. Giacomino also does an excellent job accurately depicting Lilo and Nani’s house as well as various spaceships. Further, there is a scene in which Stitch gets blasted by a ray gun and we see his skeleton as he faces an electric shock. This is also done very well and makes you feel like you’re watching a new movie.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Lilo & Stitch #1 presents an excellent visit back into the world of the Lilo & Stitch franchise. This expands further into the world by showing Earth locations outside of Hawaii as well, exploring new possibilities for storytelling. Further adventures await as Stitch finds himself in new territory. How will Experiment 626 navigate in these new locations and can he control his destructive impulses without Lilo’s guidance?
