THE DISPATCH

After last month’s first crossover, the Gargoyles once again join forces with the Fantastic Four. The action stars off right away as Johnny, Ben, Angela and Broadway face off against the Mole Man! Meanwhile, Goliath and Elisa help Reed and Sue at the Baxter Building. It wouldn’t be a Gargoyles/Fantastic Four crossover without yet another character named “Gargoyle”. Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 gives us both the Yuri Topolov Gargoyle, and his son, Kondrati Topolov AKA the Gremlin. These aren’t the only villains though, as we see Annhilus emerge from the Negative Zone and the gargoyles’ robotic enemy, Coldsteel. This is a very fast-paced issue with a lot of characters. It’s a fun story, but it feels too rushed and the placing of some of the panels and dialogue makes the story hard to follow at times. It leaves the door open for future potential crossovers as well.

ART

The art in Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 does a good job of reflecting the animation style of the Gargoyles tv show and captures the marvelous world of the Fantastic Four well too. The panels featuring the team facing off against the Mole Man’s monsters are outstanding and when the team goes into the Negative Zone, the art emulates Jack Kirby’s signature “Kirby Krackle” well, since he was the one who originally drew the characters. The Thing clobbering the creatures was very satisfying.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While Gargoyles x Fantastic Four #1 is a fun crossover that fans of both properties are sure to enjoy, the pacing makes it feel rushed and the dialogue is confusing at times, making the story difficult to follow. There’s a bit too much going on. Crossovers are fun, but when there’s too many characters and too many things happening, it ends up becoming a dull story. Lockjaw’s inclusion seemed unnecessary, especially since none of the other Inhumans joined him. He just felt like a convenient plot device. The story does wrap up nicely in a way that leaves it open for more. Would you want to see another crossover between these characters? Or see the Gargoyles meet other Marvel heroes?
