THE DISPATCH

In Gargoyles Quest #2, we pick up the story where we left off, with both Demona and Thailog vying for the theft of mystical artifacts. This issue not only references episodes from the series, such as the season 2 episode, “The Green”, but also introduces us to new characters who never appeared before on the show or in previous comics, such as the mysterious wizard known as Paolo Prospero.

We learn a little bit about this character and his connection to other characters such as Shahrizad and Monsieur Le Maire. We also see that Jade and Turquesa have continued to wear the amulets they wore in their first appearance in the show, which prevent them from turning to stone during the daytime. The dialogue is also very fitting for the characters, and fans can almost imagine the likes of Keith David, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis and others saying the lines.

ART

The art in Gargoyles Quest #2 is consistent with the previous issue. Both Goliath and Thailog’s designs seem to be a hit or miss depending on the panel. In some panels, they look practically identical to how they appeared on the show, but in other panels, their faces look strikingly different from the animation style of the show. The stand-out pages are when Goliath emerges from his stone sleep and when Thailog breaks open the vault he steals from. Coldstone very much resembles his appearance from the show, and they did a good job of displaying his infrared surveillance technology that he uses to pick up on heat signatures within the building. Lexington and Broadway are also depicted identically to their animated designs. There are also some great action panels featuring the gargoyles fighting robots.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Gargoyles Quest #2 is a good continuation to this saga. It introduces new characters, as well as references old episodes. It is still not entirely clear as to what Thailog or Demona want with the mystical artifacts, but most likely that will be revealed in future issues. How soon before Goliath and friends learn that Coldstone is actually working with Demona? And what will be the repercussions of his betrayal?
