THE DISPATCH

As we saw last issue, a giant dragon has been unleashed and ready to destroy humans! Gargoyles: Dark Ages #6 shows the dragon doing battle with both the gargoyles and humans united. There is a lot of thrilling action, as one can expect from characters battling a giant dragon. This issue shows us how the gargoyles and humans work in tandem against a common enemy, showing how they trust each other despite the dragon’s lack of trust in humans.

It even shows us how shady characters like the Archmage are cared about enough by the other characters as to rescue him from doom, despite his underhanded trickery and scheming with “Angel’ later to be known as Demona. The dialogue is fantastic and fitting for each character. It’s easy for fans to imagine the likes of Ed Asner, David Warner, and Keith David speaking the dialogue as they read.

ART

The art in Gargoyles: Dark Ages #6 shows consistency with previous issues, and depicts battle scenes very well, showing the fearsomeness of the dragon both in its enormity as well as the power it emits. There are a couple great two-page spreads of the gargoyles doing battle with the dragon, as well as the Archmage striking the dragon with a magical bolt of lightning and the dragon retaliating with a fiery attack. There is also a panel depicting a ghost character holding a magical sword and standing triumphantly. The panel showing the gargoyles chasing the dragon as they fly off into the night guy shows the fierce army of gargoyles that willing to face any threat that challenges Castle Wyvern.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While Gargoyles: Dark Ages #6 did a good job showing the humans and gargoyles united in their fight against the dragon, the outcome was somewhat anticlimactic. This series as a whole doesn’t seem to be too focused on action, and more interested in exploring the ancient folklore between the gargoyles and the humans. If you like learning about the history of these characters, you’ll enjoy it, but if you prefer something a bit more fast-paced, you may want to skip it.
