THE DISPATCH

Last time, the evil Maleficent met two mysterious specters who told her the path the power lies in the fae realm. Now, in Disney Villains: Maleficent #2, the Mistress of all evil continues to make her journey through the mysterious fae realm, unaware of what lies ahead. Maleficent does not seem very phased by all she encounters because she is focused on one goal: attaining power. She is not easily intimidated, and this comic exemplifies her character very well. This issue gives us no explanation as to how the petrified people got to be in that condition or why there is an old woman who isn’t turned to stone (at least until she meets Maleficent). The dialogue is well written and readers could easily imagine the original Maleficent voice actress, Eleanor Audley, or her modern successor, Susanne Blakeslee, saying this dialogue.

ART

The art in Disney Villains: Maleficent #2 is very reflective of the tone of the issue and the character of Maleficent herself as it has a very dark, eerie and foreboding quality to it, as lots of scenes are shrouded in shadow. That being said, when Maleficent unleashes her magic, a lot of bright colors are used to contrast the dark quality and tone of the comic. As with the previous issue, the depiction of Maleficent isn’t entirely mimicking the animation style of the movie, but there are some panels where she looks more similar to the original, animated version than others. Her expressions are communicated very well too, showing her anger, astonishment and boredom.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Disney Villains: Maleficent #2 continues to reflect the character of one of Disney’s most popular villains while showing the reader the allures of power of dangers of pursuing it as we follow Maleficent on her quest. It doesn’t reveal anything about those whom Maleficent encounters, but since the comic is supposed to be focused on her, that’s not really all that important. By issue’s end, she apparently has awakened the undead, but will this new character prove to be her ally or adversary?
