X-MEN #16 deals directly with the fallout of X OF SWORDS. So far, every other X-title has gone on its new path. Some have stumbled while others have immediately found their footing continuing right where they left off. However, in this week’s X-MEN #16 by Jonathan Hickman, two Captains make a decision that will reshape Krakoa, as well as this series and books moving forward. Let’s dive in and take a look!

Oh Captain my Captain, we finally get the beginnings of the actual X-MEN. Readers, we finally reap the beginning of an actual X-MEN team. So far, Hickman’s series has been more of an overview of what’s been happening to the mutants of Earth, their juxtaposition towards humanity, and the nature of Krakoa. However, it seems like that may all be in the past and I for one am captivated. That’s right X-MEN fans, Scott and Jean are getting the band back together. However, I truly don’t know what that band is going to look like. Some of the key players are already on their respective teams. So, we will have to see. Additionally, Scott and Jean have decided on an Election from the people, which I think is a rather interesting twist that I’m intrigued to see the outcome. Gosh, if only there was a way to have fans vote for the team… that would have been killer!
Well, the next question becomes: what sparked the necessity for an actually X-MEN team since we have so many other X-teams right now? That’s easy! To summarize, the islands of Krakoa and Arakko won’t have sexy time because they’re not attracted to each other anymore. This arranged marriage initiated by Apocalypse doesn’t need to continue if the “father” isn’t there to push the union anymore, right? Plus, the dowry sucks!!! My point: the islands and people are entirely different. Moreover, readers discover that there are technically 20 times more mutants on Arakko than Krakoa who are chomping at the bits to at some point explore Earth. Can anyone else see the future problems ready to burst from these two island’s loins? So, needless to say, the actual X-MEN team is needed to protect and preserve Krakoa, as well as the planet from a group of mutants deep-rooted in a culture of war and violence. It just makes sense. Sure, it took a long time for Hickman to get us here. But, we made it!
There was no action… only discussion. That said, battles and fight sequences don’t necessarily make a comic outstanding. It’s a strong story itself that drives a reader’s fascination with the comic. Well, Hickman delivers this week! Sure, it’s only the beginning stages of what’s on the horizon with the X-MEN. But ultimately, X OF SWORDS introduced dozens of new mutants that we’ve never seen before and has now brought many of them to Earth. 2021 is going to see this main title unquestionably intermingle with these new mutants as well as battle them throughout the next 12 months. If anything, X-MEN #16 is an intriguing prologue for the events to transpire this next calendar year. Next up, is an election for a new team. I for one am jazzed to see this new team and where the X-MEN will be heading in 2021. Readers, this is the perfect time to hop on board the main title if you haven’t already. Pick it up and let me know what you think.
