Everyone’s favorite Amazon just woke up in the dead center of a crusade, with rebelling throngs of fantastical creatures ready to annihilate her! However, there is no need to worry. Why? Well, it’s like Phil Collins says, “it’s just another day with you and me in paradise.”… or Valhalla! That’s right… WONDER WOMAN is dead. Maybe. Either way, she’s fighting for her life during the day and drinking herself silly at night. What else could anyone ask for? Let’s dive into WONDER WOMAN #770 by Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad to see if Diana can find out what’s going wrong amongst this Norse afterlife.

STORY

What a clever way to kick start a run! Honestly, how does a writing team follow up an event with the main character who basically became one of the strongest beings in the entire multiverse to stop its collapse? Really?!? Think about that one. Well, if your Cloonan and Conrad, you throw her into a new place with new people to begin a brand new odyssey like she’s never seen before. Now, I get it. Long-time fans will say, she’s recently been on a mythological journey. Or, WONDER WOMAN has already dealt with missing or warped memories before. And to that I say, you’re totally right.

Furthermore, this idea of WONDER WOMAN going to… drum roll … Asgard and Valhalla with talks of THOR and VALKYRIES had me wondering if this story was going to become a big spoof about the neighboring company. However, it’s quite the opposite. We see WONDER WOMAN as a warrior. She’s strong, fierce, and full of life for the first time in a long time. Heck, you’ll even see Diana die. Yup. The immortal Amazon Princess dies… a couple of times. So, where will this leave readers? Excited for a new vision and new direction of a character that’s been floundering through writers for what appears to be ages. Readers, she’s drinking, she’s battling, she’s talking to weird Pokémon squirrels, and she even has a sense of humor. Ultimately, I left this issue with a newfound love for WONDER WOMAN, which was so shocking after recent events from INFINITE FRONTIER and DEATH METAL.

ART

Travis Moore is a perfect fit for this wonderful revival. His illustrations are realistic, detailed, natural, and precise. This medieval/ Norse background appears to fit Moore’s artistic personality flawlessly. Moore strategically amplifies or eliminates background images and illustrations to drive the focus of the narrative or raise the emotional sense of a specific moment or juncture. His art is clear, easy to follow, and grabs your attention from page one. Moore guides the reader through the issue with ease creating dynamic illustrations that bring the story to life. Not only did Cloonan and Conrad create an exceptionally fascinating story but Moore set the tone and attitude of this ongoing masterfully.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Readers, I couldn’t be more excited for the direction Cloonan, Conrad, and Moore are taking WONDER WOMAN. And after INFINITE FRONTIER, DEATH METAL, and FUTURE STATE, this title wasn’t even on my radar. Nonetheless, with this “soft reboot” (if you will), I decided to give it a shot and was so incredibly surprised as to how much I loved it. Moore’s art is phenomenal and the intriguing storyline that Cloonan and Conrad are brewing feels vibrant, sharp, brilliant, and energizing. I highly recommend giving this issue, as well as this run of WONDER WOMAN, a quality glance. Let me know what you think, have a great week, and God Bless!
