A shocking look at the Marvel Universe is revealed as Timeless #1 by Jed MacKay take a look at the future of this 2023 year at Marvel. The last battle of Kang the Conqueror! Tyrant of the timeline, master of endless legions, warrior and conqueror without compare, Kang is in search of the one thing he cannot have. But he is not the only one after the Missing Moment, and Kang soon finds himself in a new position on the run across the events of the Marvel Universe’s future!
Well, just like last year, we are back with another Timeless issue in order to kick start some speculation for the upcoming 2023 year at Marvel Comics. And who better to give fans an overview than Kang the Conqueror? So, what does Kang want? Great question! What does the man who can travel backwards and forwards through time at will truly need? According to MacKay, it’s the Missing Moment, which simply draws even more questions. What is this Missing Moment? Is it the moment everything began? Is it the moment that changed the future forever? Is it the moment he becomes Immortus? Either way, Kang happens to find one individual who knows this answer but decides to hold back the answer from the Conqueror who normally gets what he wants when he wants it.
However, MacKay begins to develop Kang with some depth. Readers begin to see a different side of Kang. Instead of one solely stuck on power and universal conquest, we begin to see the heart of depression within the great Conqueror. More treasures and more knowledge are simply not enough. It just doesn’t fill that hole inside. Leave it to humanity to desire what they can’t have and never be satisfied. The irony is that even Kang with all his power and might still can’t quench that thirst for more.
Suddenly, Kang is interrupted by another who seeks the Missing Moment to which we see Kang escape through time with Greg Land showcasing some events in the background that are currently unraveling at Marvel. From the evil Beast to a Tony Stark that appears to be falling off the wagon again and the return of Doctor Strange, MacKay glosses over some events that will continue to unfold this year in hopes to sprinkle some clues as to the directional path of this coming 2023 year in Marvel Comics. Yet, it gets better as readers see some crazy events that are upon us that will happen to Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Krakoa, and even an appearance from the Pet Avengers again! Readers, the genius behind MacKay providing a rock-solid story that sprinkles in some hidden teasers for the upcoming year in the background is just brilliant.
Nevertheless, MacKay ramps up the intensity and action as Kang attempts to take down his would-be attackers by heading to Tribulation Events, which was probably one of, if not the, best part of Timeless #1. Readers get some pretty wrenched-up action alongside the perfect play-by-play from MacKay. It’s almost like an outstanding chess match between Kang and this futuristic Medieval Court sent to end Kang and grab the Missing Moment for themselves.
MacKay crafts a well-organized tale that will keep readers at the edge of their seats. Timeless #1 infuses some high-octane action, dangles a few carrots that will gradually be revealed as 2023 unravels, and promotes an extremely well-balanced story that should provide some much-needed hope for Marvel Comics in 2023. MacKay concocts some depth to Kang the Conqueror, crafts some clever story beats for the future of Marvel Comics, and provides a super interesting tale that gets this reviewer excited for some more Kang issues this year. Ultimately, Timeless #1 doesn’t answer a ton of questions and frankly piles on even more. However, that’s the exact point of the narrative, which MacKay does in spades. His job was to provoke excitement for what’s to come in 2023 and he succeeds in that area brilliantly.
Additionally, I’ve been following MacKay’s work for quite some time now and Timeless #1 shows fans a creator that’s really coming into his own. Over the years, I’ve drastically transitioned from a “character” comic fan to a “creator” comic fan. Meaning, I tend to read for the creative team now more than the character because I want good stories more than average stories about characters I like. When it just so happens to be both, that’s a win-win. My point is that I continue to find MacKay higher and higher on that list of writers I want to read and I believe Timeless #1 will showcase exactly what I’m talking about if given the chance. I highly recommend grabbing Timeless #1, especially if you’re a comic fan looking to get pumped for what’s to come in 2023. Let me know what you think, have a great week, and God Bless!
