STORY
Star Wars Adventures #8 comprises two short stories. The first is written by Sam Maggs with art by Liana Kangas, and is entitled “The Princess and the Bog – part 2.” It features Luke & Leia combing the galaxy in search of a new home base for the rebellion. They eventually find themselves on the planet Bogano. On Bogano, they uncover a group of Stormtroopers who are planning to kidnap & sell the planet’s inhabitants (who Luke & Leia call “Fuzzies”) on the black market. Can Luke & Leia save these cute, defenseless creatures from the evils of the Empire? The second installment entitled “Trade Relations” is written by Danny Lore with art by Arianna Florean and takes place on Rylorii Minor, a neutral mining planet in the Western Reaches. In this story, The Republic sends a senator (assisted by clone troopers) to negotiate a treaty with the local mayor. When an assassin attempts to disrupt the negotiations, all chances of a treaty agreement seem impossible. The question is… who is behind these attacks and why?
OVERALL THOUGHTS
Star Wars Adventures #8 is a “mixed bag” of entertainment and silliness. I found myself very disconnected and bored by the first story – “The Princess and the Bog – part 2.” My first problem is with the writing. I had difficulty with the dialogue. For example, in one panel Luke falls to the ground. Leia helping him up says, “c’mon up you get.” Huh? I have a hard time picturing Leia saying that. Also, I found the art to be below average. Where this issue improves is within the second installment. The story by Danny Lore was interesting and the art by Arianna Florean was well done. The style was a bit “cartoony” but that is to be expected in this type of book. However, the real gem comes on the last page – no spoilers.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Star Wars Adventures #8 is a book that I would describe as “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” Overall, the issue can be enjoyed by younger Star Wars fans who are looking for some simple, fun stories that are cute and may even make you chuckle. The second story in this issue is much better than the first and can be enjoyed by all Star Wars Adventures fans. However, if you are a new reader of this series, I wouldn’t recommend starting with this issue. You need to begin with Star Wars Adventures #7 to get part 1 of the first story.
