Well, the King is back! Peter David delivers a classic Hulk story that makes fans realize what they’ve been missing with the current IMMORTAL HULK run by Al Ewing. Now, I’m saying IMMORTAL HULK is bad by any stretch. I absolutely adore the run. However, David and Ewing’s tales are both drastically different and hinge on different aspects of the character that are both noteworthy, admirable, and needed. Nonetheless, David merely creates a story this reviewer never knew he needed… UNTIL NOW!
Readers shouldn’t come to MAESTRO #1 expecting a horror comic nor should they expect a frightening fantasy filled with gore and punishment. However, they can expect the classic inner dialogue from Doctor Banner and an intriguing story right from Jump Street. David’s inaugural narrative was straightforward, honest, and true to the Hulk. His take was wonderfully familiar and showed his true experience and knowledge that made stories like HULK: FUTURE IMPERFECT so outstanding. Hulk fans simply need to keep in mind that the cold open is rather cryptic in the beginning but it genuinely reveals all before the issue concludes. Furthermore, the story is incredibly easy to follow, makes sense, and seems realistic and logical to Marvel Comics as well as our world today. And, if the story isn’t enough to sway you, look no further than the illustrations by Germán Peralta and his creative team. This art team brings incredible detail and savagery to Hulk’s totality providing their own unique spin that brings the story to life in an outright smashing display.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Readers, MAESTRO #1 is an amazing place to start after an almost 30-year layoff from the original narrative. David creates a vivid, realistic story while sprinkling in a few wrinkles that left this reviewer wanting more. As cliche as it might be to say, I not only didn’t want the narrative to end but I left this inaugural issue overly excited for what’s to come. This comic simply felt like it’s been missing from the current comic landscape and I have no doubt Hulk fans will be thrilled with David’s first issue. It’s great but not so great that there’s nowhere else to go. The sky is the limit with this series and I can’t wait for more. Ultimately, readers will end with the premise that the world needs a leader… or dare I say a Maestro. You’ll feel for the homicidal tyrant before the first installment wraps up! Everyone should grab this comic and add it to their pull list. Don’t wait until the weekend. Readers should head immediately to their LCS and pick this up. Feel free to thank me later!
