So, how much do you know about Jennifer Walters? Granted, most know she’s the SHE-HULK but do most comic fans know her origin or her connection to the Gamma? And, does the average comic fan know some of the more pertinent details of the character or even her connection to the Green Door currently? Well, let’s dive into IMMORTAL SHE-HULK #1 by Al Ewing and take a smashingly deep dive into the mystery surrounding the Green Door and Jennifer Walter’s connection to it after her recent death in EMPYRE.

As an IMMORTAL HULK fan, I was super pumped to read this issue. I was curious as to the angle Ewing was going to take. For those who haven’t been following along at home, She-Hulk has changed quite a bit since AVENGERS began with Jason Aaron. She’s more of the brute, childlike Hulk than ever before. The tall, green, almost muscular supermodel look is along gone from Ms. Walters. So, I was wondering if Ewing would elaborate more on her current transformation. Sadly, he didn’t. However, Ewing took some time to give fans an outstanding recap of Jennifer Walters and build on her background prior to the release of the new series soon on DISNEY PLUS, which I’m also ecstatic to see.
Ewing catches his readers up with a quick snapshot of an origin story followed by a quick recap on the Green Door. And, to those who haven’t been reading IMMORTAL HULK, Ewing really drove home the key components to usher new readers along splendidly. Additionally, Ewing uses his experience with the Green Goliath well and weaves together many of the same underlying characteristics within the pages of IMMORTAL HULK simply without Joe Bennett’s horrifyingly grotesques artistic tones. However, Bennett fans can still see his amazing influence on a variety of pages throughout this issue.
Now, everything wasn’t perfect. This reviewer didn’t like Ewing’s take on Wolverine or Krakoa for that matter. Moreover, the artistic depiction of Thor seemed a bit off as well. However, overall this story brought the IMMORTAL HULK title more to the forefront of a variety of readers while capturing the attention of SHE-HULK fans in the process. For fans that have been clamoring for a She-Hulk Issue/ Comic for a long time will be pleased with Ewing’s take while incorporating key elements of his own run. I have no doubt that we will see Ewing and She-Hulk together again whether it be in an ongoing series or as a regular within the main IMMORTAL HULK title before his run is done. I highly recommend giving this issue a chance and feel like more She-Hulk is probably in the works coming this New Year.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This issue was informative, creative, thought-provoking, and very ingenious as to how Ewing managed to incorporate SHE-HULK into the Gamma fold. I think the reception will be high for this book and a series will probably cascade out of the issue from here. Again, I highly recommend picking this issue up. It’s totally worth the buy for any and all HULK fans. That said, it’s not ideal for people who haven’t been following the IMMORTAL HULK story or even the latest AVENGERS run. Nevertheless, She-Hulk fans will still get tons of enjoyment from this issue.
