The true Guardians have finally come back together and their first voyage is to ensure a crucial energy pipeline from a gang of terrorists comprising of Nova, a doppelganger, and a trash panda in a suit. And, just when you think you know where this one is heading, keep in mind that this is the Guardians of the Galaxy and things always get worse before they get better! So, let’s dive into the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #4 by Al Ewing to see just how disastrous this scheme actually is.

The diehard GOTG fans will be thoroughly ecstatic this week as Ewing continues the explosive, fast-paced, and wildly entertaining display that has been GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY since he took the reins. I love the two dynamic teams running parallel at the exact same time including the new recruits. It’s as if Ewing has found a way to bring the series back to its roots while finding a way to rejuvenate the character base and team with some fresh and inventive spice.

My interest is definitely piqued to see where Ewing is taking this series. Plus, readers still can’t forget about the elephant in the room… what’s actually going on with Starlord? Is he “really” dead? Can anyone stay dead in Comics? So, with this incredibly large elephant not being addressed (which is by far the best angle of the story), the series is STILL brilliantly interesting, spirited, and clever. Just stop for a minute and think about how much more impact this narrative could have as this comic unfolds. The potential and story are truly outstanding and I for one am excited to see what Ewing’s up to next.

And if the story doesn’t do it for you (and it should), Juann Cabal leads an extraordinary art team that really makes this issue pop. Federico Blee and GURU-eFX’s colors are rich and saturate each page while Cabal’s illustrations and inks are incredibly sharp, distinctive, and well polished. Cabal’s team, with the help of Ewing, deliver a stimulating issue that really captivated this reviewer and threw me into the story from start to finish.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Ewing’s fourth installment of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was fun, quirky, wonderfully easy to follow, and simply hard to forget. Marvel Boy becomes a star before this issue is said and done while Ewing uses a unique manner of storytelling to attract his audience deeper into the comic. Plus, as if the story wasn’t enough, Cabal and his art team find a way to expressively engage the readers from each flip of the page. Readers, we’re only four issues into the story. So, it’s not too late to add this series to your pull list. GOTG fans, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by this issue and frankly the series to date. I highly recommend snagging this week’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #4 and hopping on board before the train gets too far from the station. Now is definitely the time to join this team!
