In the continuing saga of Disney’s Gargoyles, Gargoyles #2 picks up where the action left off, as the clan searches for Maggie, who is about to deliver a baby. Unbeknownst to the main characters, she has been kidnapped by Thailog, Goliath’s evil clone. This issue continues the storyline, and sees the clan helping Elisa’s brother Derek (AKA Talon) to find her. We also see new characters: learning that Brooklyn and his significant other (who is also new) are expecting a child, another dog-like gargoyle guardian Fu-dog (whom fans may wonder if the name was inspired by a character of the same name from the Disney Channel show, American Dragon: Jake Long) and Tony Dracon’s sister, Antoinette, referred to by her father as Toni. This issue also brings David Xanatos back into the fold. He was a major enemy of the Gargoyles in seasons 1 and 2, and an ally in season 3, but since Weisman is writing from the standpoint that season 3 is non-canon, it remains to be seen whether Xanatos has once again embraced his villainous nature.

The art in Gargoyles #2 continues to be a good homage to the animation style of the show. There are some points, however, where it can be unclear as to the order of action/dialogue on a page, and where the speech bubbles are too light. That being said, it still presents the reader with a story that is reminiscent of the show.

Gargoyles #2 is an exciting story that shows us new characters and brings back some more old characters, leaving great potential for more stories to be explored than were on the show. Hopefully we will find out what side Xanatos is on, as well as Brooklyn’s lover, and the relationship between Tony Dracon and his sister. Gargoyles fans, where do you think the story will go from here, and what could Thailog want with Maggie’s child?
