As DC Comics is in the middle of its two-month Future State of books that will give us a “glimpse into the unwritten rules of tomorrow”, let’s see what that may be for our so called future “A” list hero Nightwing!!

The first thing I noticed when reading this issue is the spectacular colorwork by Ivan Plascencia. The “wanted” poster in the background let me know promptly what tone/type of book this will be. The subtle way the art tells the story is a major shift for DC that I find kind of refreshing. I don’t need to be inundated with words. Many times less is more.

The title page provides us with our first clear look at Nightwing’s whole costume. It’s certainly instantly recognizable but with some obvious differences. The chin strap has generated a lot of talk and that’s clearly on display here. It’s “meh” to me. I see a chinstrap, I think it should hold something on your head. So maybe it’s holding on that perfect head of hair!? It’s a non-factor to me. I’m glad the costume didn’t venture too far away from the classic blue Nightwing though.

This whole Future State thing made me a bit skeptical honestly. Was it just a place holder for two months while DC got their ducks in a row, would it even matter since these stories “may” happen? Let’s be honest, there will likely be another reboot in 4/5 years and the new heads of DC could very likely choose to completely ignore Future State ever happened. But after reading this issue, I decided that none of that other stuff matters. I’m going to enjoy it for what it is. Future State: Nightwing #1 is a really good story. The two-month time frame has put limits on the time to tell a story and it forces the creative teams to either sink or swim. Andrew Constant structures his writing in a way that gives us our main character, supporting cast, allies, as well as who the villains are, what their goal is, and how our heroes will prepare to defeat them. What more could we as fans ask for? Some series go 12 issues and never give us all these things. And we get it all in one issue!!

Final Thoughts:

After being on the fence about Future State I’m now fully on board! Being set in the future, it’s set up perfectly for new fans as well as long time Nightwing fans. I hope that DC will keep the momentum going through Future State and into the new Infinite Frontier era. This is a super book. I can’t recommend it enough!
