THE DISPATCH

Johns’ story diverges in a direction unforeseen just like Hypertime itself! However, that divergence wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. FLASHPOINT BEYOND #3 opens up a huge storyline that just doesn’t seem possible to conclude before this series is over. Plus, it’s hard to see the connection right now between the Subject 1 storyline and FLASHPOINT BATMAN’S narrative.

Both stories are incredibly interesting and truly do spark this reviewer’s interest. Yet, I can’t fathom how answers will be given without cutting some serious fat off both plot threads OR (and I hope it’s this option) Johns, Adams, and Sheridan venture off on a different “Hypertime path” that sees the continuation of this FLASHPOINT universe in a new series even after this series. Technically, it would make sense for the series to continue into something else considering the title is FLASHPOINT “BEYOND”.

Ultimately, readers get little action or thrills BUT get some amazing plot threads that could prove to be rather unique and intriguing to the characters. After reading FLASHPOINT BEYOND, fans should be able to see the potential ooze off the page. The only real flaw in this week’s FLASHPOINT BEYOND #3 is that we still get little answers as to the how and why this universe is up and running. Plus, Johns and his team spiral out of control with a bunch of Hypertime talk as this issue wraps that could truly make your head spin.

Nevertheless, the REVERSE FLASH reveals will certainly cause some speculation meant to excite and the angle surrounding Mrs. Dent shows the true world-building this creative team is driving forth. Readers, there is so much more meat left on the bone to really sink your teeth into. There is no doubt you need to pick this series up. I know we’re three issues in but I guarantee you that your local shop has all three in or can at least get them for you if need be. So, what are you waiting for?

ART

Admittedly, the opening elongated panels were difficult to read as well as added a sense of claustrophobia to each page. However, other than the opening, Xermánico and this team were lights out. Their take on SUPERMAN from the FLASHPOINT universe was dark and relentless. Just check out the scene with Subject 1 (A.K.A. SUPERMAN) where his glowing red eyes put straight fear into this reviewer.

Plus, the fusion of Kryptonian tech mixed with the Green was an elegant twist that showed the range Xermánico’s team has for this story instead of the constant, dark cityscapes, alleys, blood, and killings. This style can truly work in so many different environments and FLASHPOINT BEYOND #3 really did well showcasing the potential, not just from a story perspective, but also from the artistic side too.

FINAL THOUGHTS

FLASHPOINT BEYOND #3 uncovers the true potential for the “beyond” FLASHPOINT universe. This isn’t going to stop here folks. It can’t. After reading FLASHPOINT BEYOND #3, you can’t help but see a door open to a universe of possibilities with Thomas Wayne at the center of it all. However, the intriguingly new, crispy nuggets of story beats still don’t answer the how and why this is all happening. And, how does Bruce know anything about it at all? Plus, what’s REVERSE FLASH have to do with all this?

Furthermore, can Johns and his team not only fix Thomas Wayne but also simultaneously better explain Hypertime while weaving together the FLASHPOINT universe? If anyone can do it, it’s most certainly a team led by Geoff Johns. Sure, there may be little action in this week’s issue but there are certainly some huge surprises and speculations on the horizon that are sure to impress. Readers, this is the best thing happening at DC COMICS right now, hands down! You need to pick this up and get on board if you haven’t already. Let me know what you think, have a great week, and God Bless!

  1. I enjoyed reading this review and agree with your enthusiasm. Love the Flashpoint storyline and am so glad that Johns is at the helm of a new story with Thomas Wayne at its center. As far as finding these books at your local comic shop, I have three near me and none of them have any in stock – once the book lands its best to hustle over and get it asap (unless you have a pull).

    1. I hate to admit it but you’re right and that’s why I buy online. I know it’s not helping the LCS but at least I get what I want. Also, digital first then buy hard copies at the shop later as well. But this series is going fast. What do you think of Jeremy Adams flash run? Either way, I appreciate the read and I’m glad you enjoyed the review. Feel free to chat whenever. I’m on all the socials for the most part under dispatchdcu and have a Facebook group as well. Thanks again!!
