THE DISPATCH

At the end of last issue, Scar was about to confront the fearsome hyena queen. In Disney Villains: Scar #3, we are introduced to the hyena queen. This story serves as a good explanation for how Scar became leader of the hyenas in the movie, in particular of Shenzi, Banzai and Ed. It also shows us how the hyenas interacted amongst themselves and what they thought of lions, prior to Scar’s leadership. The hyena queen is portrayed as ruthless and is willing to eat her own, literally. She clearly cares about no one but herself. This shows why the hyenas are the perfect associates for Scar. They are selfish and ruthless, willing to kill anyone who gets in their way.  This character is a worthy rival to Scar, but seeing as she is not in the movie, it will be interesting to learn what ends up happening to her.

ART

The art of Disney Villains: Scar #3 continues to emulate the visual style of The Lion King film well, though not perfectly. Yet, we can clearly tell the difference between Shenzi, Banzai and Ed, and their appearances are similar to that of how they were depicted in the film. The colors are bright, symbolizing the peace and prosperity of the pride lands currently under Mufasa’s rule. The final page shows us a character who appeared in the movie, though this character is good in the film. Scar’s dialogue suggests that this character will be used as an unwitting pawn in Scar’s deadly game next issue.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The story is really heating up in  Disney Villains: Scar #3. It gives a good backstory on how Scar met the hyenas, shows him interacting with a fierce rival in that of the hyena queen, and it shows the extent of Scar’s ruthlessness, doing whatever he can to secure his rule over the kingdom. As in the film, Scar is shown to be able to easily persuade the hyenas. Some of Scar’s lines in this issue even mimic lines from his big musical number, “Be Prepared”, which hasn’t happened yet at this point in the timeline. Fans will still be able to recognize some similarities to the lyrics as they read. Be prepared for what will happen next!
