THE DISPATCH

Realistically, comic fans get an extremely quick story that’s a simple intel mission gone wrong. However Sgt. Rock’s team discovers the true, legit plan of the Germans and uses this issue of DC Horror Presents Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead to push the story closer towards Hitler. Nevertheless, as far as actual substance to the story goes, there isn’t much. This week’s issue is basically a long-winded action scene at a rapid-fire pace with few reveals and no real cliffhanger.

On the outside, the story sounds flat. Yet it was far from that. Sure, the plot didn’t progress much but I don’t think the intent of this series is for anything mind-blowing in the first place. It’s meant to be a simple, easy-to-follow, entertaining zombie flick… but in comic form. And so far, that’s exactly all it is. The only real knock I can give DC Horror Presents Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead is the lack of character development. Readers new to Sgt. Rock and his crew get almost no explanation or background on the characters. Their names are tossed around like everyone is supposed to know exactly who they are… and they don’t. Again, that helps with the speed of the narrative but comes at the disadvantage of the character development.

FINAL THOUGHTS

DC Horror Presents Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead #2 was certainly fun but it does feel like it’s missing… substance. For those fans that want a quick, easy-to-read story with little thought and a quick escape, this comic and series are for you, especially around the holiday season. Additionally, the darker tones are done very well and add an element of horror to the comic but in a way where fans can still depict exactly what’s happening throughout the issue. This can be difficult for some art teams to pull off but not this one.

So, would I buy it? Well, after DC Horror Presents Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead #1, I would have. I loved the way the story began. However, after reading this issue, I’m a bit more hesitant. And, it’s not because I’m not digging the story. Germans, Hitler, zombies, and Sgt. Rock screams a wildly fun time. It’s my nervousness surrounding the lack of story development mixed with the speed of the issue. Sure, it was entertaining and loads of fun. However, there really was no depth or substance to the story this week, which would cause me to rethink keeping it on my pull list. As of right now, I’m on the fence about keeping the series on a short leash. With money being tight for almost everyone right now, if I’m not hooked after DC Horror Presents Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead #3, I think I’m abandoning ship. Let me know what you think, have a great week, and God Bless!
