It’s science, meets horror in this almost supernatural science fiction tale by Gerry Duggan in this week’s CABLE. Duggan takes the opportunity this week to continue the X OF SWORDS tale with the 8th installment while ushering along a genuine Cable story sprinkled in with a special dose of space horror that will fuel future readers for the CABLE ongoing. And if it doesn’t set your heart a flutter for CABLE, then maybe readers will be excited for the future S.W.O.R.D. ongoing arriving this December with its first potential threat on the horizon!!! Let’s jump into CABLE #5 by Gerry Duggan to see the next installment of this X OF SWORDS Contest of Champions.

Duggan does a masterful job this week of seemingly creating a powerful one-shot to draw Cable into the story, push X-MEN fans into the CABLE ongoing, and doing all of this while taking slow and steady strides of getting Kid Cable on the side of loyal X-readers. To be frank, it’s been a struggle since his de-aging. Many readers have not been pleased… myself included. And ultimately, I feel loyal X-MEN fans have had zero desire to take this series on a test run. However, since Duggan began this journey, I’ve read each only to be pleasantly surprised by my palette change. Young Cable is growing on me more than pineapple and ham on pizza. At first, Hawaiian Pizza was such a turn off to me. Now, I quite enjoy it.

With that noted, I highly recommend giving Kid Cable as well as Duggan’s entire CABLE a test drive. This issue is the perfect opportunity for readers to dip their toe into the water to see what it’s like while already investing in the overall X OF SWORDS Contest of Champions! Furthermore, Duggan has done the best job of continuing HIS story exactly where it left off while incorporating the X OF SWORDS elements with his plot threads and narratives. CABLE fans not interested in X OF SWORDS will still appreciate this issue and will also respect Duggan’s story continuing as normal while fitting the puzzle pieces together for this Contest of Champions splendidly.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This issue of CABLE is fast and loose while showcasing exactly what the Summers family has to offer. Readers intrigued by supernatural space operas will leave excited for the future storylines that may be confronted by Cable and S.W.O.R.D. Sure, this issue didn’t focus on X OF SWORDS too much. Heck, Cable already had the sword he needed. However, being the expert storyteller he is, Duggan used that plot point as an opportunity to saturate readers in his ongoing title while providing an opening to give readers another taste of Kid Cable. If you’re not reading CABLE, you need to get on it already!!!
