What is Young Cable to do with these Ancient Space Knights on his tail? Well, the last issue he took them to see Deadpool “King of the Monsters” in order to find his older dead self and steal his cybernetic arm. Seems a bit out of character, right? Exactly! Cable’s purpose was to somehow use this arm to save Earth AND the Space Knights planet at the same time. Let’s jump into CABLE #4 by Gerry Duggan in hopes to discover how Young Cable is going to save both planets with his older dead self’s arm. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures!

As much as I really miss the old, grizzly Cable, I must admit that Duggan’s version of this Kid Cable is certainly growing on me. Don’t get me wrong; I’d much rather the Cable X-fans are more accustomed too. But, Duggan’s version definitely has its moments. For example, this issue still had its humorous components, adolescence quirks, and a fantastic back-and-forth between Cable and Esme. Plus, Duggan continues to create a vigorously, entertaining ride that will definitely help you escape the real world for a bit. Moreover, Duggan uses some of his page count to help x-plain EXTERMINATION as well as some background on the Space Knights from the series ROM: SPACE KNIGHT. However, I just left with this feeling like the issue was missing… something.

As comics go, CABLE is truly top-notch. And, maybe that’s what’s missing? This issue just wasn’t as funny or as crazy as the prior issues. Furthermore, some of the time travel components at the beginning of the story seemed a bit too confusing to follow and frankly didn’t make sense. Selfishly, I was also loving the Space Knights and it appears like the relationship will be put on hold for a bit as CABLE #4 concludes. Nevertheless, I left this issue simply wanting more. It’s actually the same feeling I got this week with WOLVERINE #5.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Readers, the pace and action are still wonderfully balanced with the humor sprinkled in as needed to lighten the mood of the story. CABLE #4, as well as the entire series, continues to be clear, easy to follow, and unique from anything else on the market. However, this issue was a bit flat compared to others within the series. Nonetheless, as average as CABLE #4 was this week, it’s still an outstanding series overall, a solid read, and an excellent x-title. Even if the story may have been a bit too balanced this week, Phil Noto’s art will always make this series worth the price alone.
