I AM THE BLACK WIDOW PART 2

Black Widow #8 begins with a wordy recap by Kelly Thompson to catch the new readers up to speed with what’s been going on in the series. Kudos to Thompson. Moreover, this issue came across as a classic spy story with Natasha hunting for clues, breaking into places, beating people up, and escaping with the use of cool gadgets. Ultimately, Black Widow #8 saw Yelena Belova and Natasha Romanova dig deeper into Apogee’s cult with the help of Anya Corazon, the Spider-Girl.

As stated earlier, the story begins very wordy, almost too much. However, it gets better as the plot progresses with some incredible action sequences. Furthermore, Anya gets to do some interesting spy stuff as the story strides well after the word salad from the first few pages. Still, the suspenseful ending felt a little abrupt causing this reviewer to struggle to realize why the guy with the glasses was the one they needed. Nevertheless, I guess that’s something we’ll find out in the next installment of Black Widow.

ART

The art by Elena Casagrande and Rafael De Latorre is clean and reminds me of some classic European comics in style. It works well to keep the story grounded and real as is fitting for a comic about super spies. Jordie Bellaire’s colors do what they are supposed to and don’t innovate much with them, sticking to tried and true color choices.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Black Widow #8 gives us a few thrills and new pieces for the puzzle that is Apogee’s final plan. Yet, it doesn’t really clear the picture much. One could almost skip this issue except for the last few pages which are the ones that really matter for the story going forward. This week’s Black Widow is okay, readers get some progress, and the art fits the tone of the book. However, it was difficult to regain my attention and focus after the word salad at the beginning of the issue.
